Cinders explores the evocative tension between permanence and fragility embodied in fire-treated wood. The enduring strength of charred timber is exemplified in Japan, where the traditional yakisugi technique has safeguarded wooden structures for over four centuries. I’m honored that my work Feathers—now part of the Museum for Art in Wood’s permanent collection—is included in this exhibition. I hope you’ll come see it!

I am honored to have been selected to be a part of this exhibition curated by Jennifer-Navva Milliken, Executive Director of the Museum for Art in Wood. Informed by material, form, and by questions of offering and ownership, or concealment and emptiness, this show examines the vessel as a source of inspiration for artists working in wood. This curated selection of works demonstrates the breadth of reflection, empowerment, subversion, and spiritual awareness inspired by the act of containment and the vessel form.
